W hat D oes G od T hink about  G ay  P eople ?
But is it bad to be gay? I have heard people in our church
talk about gay people as if that is really bad. Are they right?
Well, that depends on what you mean by really bad. Your
mom and I believe that the Bible teaches that all of us have bad
in us. Romans 3:23 says that “all have sinned and fall short of the
glory of God.” Everyone has sinned. That means you and I are just
as much of a sinner as any gay or lesbian person, and that is a really
bad thing.
When we say that someone is a bad person, we often mean that
the person does bad things all the time, or even that the person enjoys
being really evil and never misses an opportunity to do something
that is wrong. But most gay or lesbian people are not this way any
more than most husbands or wives are this way. Many homosexual
people are kind, hardworking, truthful, or show other good ways of
behaving. And all homosexual people were made in God’s image and
deserve to be treated with dignity.
It is still true, though, that God does not want men to have sex
with men, or women with women. The Bible doesn’t talk a lot about
people acting like homosexuals. But in those few places where it does,
the Bible describes it as something that God does not want people to
do. For example, Leviticus 18:22 says, “You shall not lie with a male
as with a woman; it is an abomination.” Clearly, this is something
God does not want us to do.
And 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 says, “Do you not know that the
unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be
deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the
greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the
kingdom of God.”
So gay people can’t go to heaven?
