Facing the Facts
think they speak for God! There are many different opinions about
God’s view of sex!”
We do not think we speak for God. But here’s the thing: We do
believe in and follow Jesus. For two thousand years, Christians have
believed the following:

Jesus taught and acted in a way that shows us he believed that
what we now call the Old Testament was God’s Word.
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets;
I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say
to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will
pass from the Law until all is accomplished.” M AT T H E W 5 : 1 7 - 1 8

Jesus believed that his own words were on par with Scripture.
(For example, when he said things like “You have heard that it
was said _____, but I say ______.”)
“All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and
no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one
knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom
the Son chooses to reveal him.” MATTHEW 11:27
“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you
that everyone who is angry with his brother . . .” M AT T H E W 5 : 2 1 - 2 2

Jesus declared his own words to be eternal and completely
reliable, to be the words (or Word) of God.
“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.”
M AT T H E W 2 4 : 3 5

Jesus taught his apostles that he would continue to speak his
Word through his people, and so Christians came to believe
that the writings of the early apostolic teachers that were
assembled as the New Testament are Scripture.
