LIFESKILLS
‘Today developing life skills is more important than learning core subject skills’
The term ‘Life Skills’ refers to the skills you need to make the most out of life. Life skills are
often known as the ability for the adaptive and positive behaviour that enable humans to deal
effectively with the demands and challenges of life. This concept is also termed as
psychosocial competency. The subject varies greatly depending upon the societal norms and
community expectations. Through life skills we also develop into an active and productive
member of the communities that are also considered as life skills. It is wisely said, that out of
all the life skills available to us, communication is perhaps the most empowering one.
Any skill that is useful in your life can be considered a life skill. Tying your shoe laces,
swimming, driving a car and using a computer are, for most people, useful life skills. Broadly
speaking, the term ‘life skills’ is usually used for any of the skills needed to deal well and
effectively with the challenges of life.
Life skill has been classified into three broad categories:
• Thinking skills: Thinking skills are the skill that enhances the logical faculty of the brain
using an analytical ability, thinking creatively and critically, and developing problem-solving
skills and improving decision-making abilities.
• Social skills: Social skills include interpersonal skills, communication skills, leadership
skills, management skills, advocacy skills, co-operation and team building skills, etc.
• Emotional skills: Emotional skills, involves, knowing and being comfortable with oneself.
Thus, self– management, including managing/coping with feelings, emotions, stress and
resisting peer and family pressure
...perhaps the most important life skill is the ability and willingness to learn.
By learning new skills, we increase our understanding of the world around us and equip
ourselves with the tools we need to live a more productive and fulfilling life, finding ways to
cope with the challenges that life, inevitably, throws at us.
Hence education, now a days is important, but the kind of education, to support and live life
better is more important. Thus, the cardinal focus of Education, needs an extraordinary
emphasis on developing such skills in students, as they are the important building blocks for a
dynamic citizen, who can cope up with future challenges, and survive.
Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) India has recognized this fact that it is
necessary to develop both scholastic as well as co-scholastic areas and make life skills
compulsory. Therefore, We at K.R Mangalam World school, GK-II have made life skill
education as a compulsory element in our curriculum.
