Bird watching gives me a lot of joy
By Gurnoor Dhillon 9B
My interest in birds started on a
family trip to Australia, where I saw
exotic birds like the cockatoo,
rosella and many more. Coming
back home, I started noticing the
birds in and around GK2 where I
live, starting with the lawn in my
house. We have a lovely lawn with
lots of plants and a champa tree in
one corner, which birds love to
frequent. There is an earthen bowl of
water and a bird feeder as well. We
are lucky to have a resident pair of
sparrows who live in our house and
have raised at least two broods of chicks here. Other frequent visitors are bulbuls, babblers,
parrots and a tailer bird who likes to drop in often, and announces his arrival with loud “tweet
tweets”! Our central park (W block) is a mini forest where I have seen many varieties like
Indian grey hornbill, lesser flameback woodpecker, common hoopoe and green bee eater.
Gk2 is also fortunate to have a huge green belt like the Jahanpanah forest close by with
abundance of birds.
Another good place for bird
watching is the park next to the
kali mandir in CR park. It has
very dense foliage and home to
the white breasted kingfisher,
magpie robins and brown headed
barbets. In winters you may also
spot the Siberian Chiffchaff. If
my fellow friends share this
interest, please share your
experience with me.
