BUSINESS MILESTONES
Amy’s Drive Thru, now opening its fourth
location, plans to open 17 new locations
across the West Coast, including in areas like
Los Angeles, Sacramento, Portland and
Seattle. Each one will be designed with a sustainability goal of net zero, to balance the
amount of greenhouse gas produced and the
amount removed from the atmosphere, All of
its packaging is compostable, and its uniforms
feature organic cotton t-shirts.
Apeel Sciences has acquired ImpactVision.
ImpactVision’s hyperspectral imaging technology is to be integrated into Apeel application
systems. The technology enables suppliers to
see inside and understand the interior quality
of fresh produce by collecting quantifiable
data on the stage of ripeness, freshness, nutritional density, and other indicators of quality.
Ardent Mills LLC has acquired Hinrichs
Trading Co. (HTC), a chickpea sourcing, cleaning and packaging business including organic.
Based in Pullman, WA, HTC operates across
five locations in Washington and Montana.
Dramm Corporation has begun construction
on its new headquarters in Manitowoc,
Wisconsin. The new 98,000-square-foot building will increase Dramm’s warehouse and
office space, with the capability to expand in
the future. The family-owned and operated
business now has 93 employees.
Grimmway Farms has donated $5 million to
the Cal Poly College of Agriculture, Food and
Environmental Sciences to launch the Center
for Organic Production and Research on campus, as well as build the Grimmway
Farms//Cal-Organic Soil Health and
Sustainability Laboratories. The latter will provide research and teaching opportunities in
topics related to healthy soils, water, and air.
In marking the 35th anniversary of Kamut
International this year, founder Bob Quinn, a
third-generation farmer from North Central
Montana, handed over the company’s leadership to his nephew, Trevor Blyth. Going forward, Trevor is overseeing the KAMUT®
brand globally as president. The brand of
Khorasan wheat is now grown on over
100,000 acres in Montana and Saskatchewan,
Canada, and exported globally to be made
into organic food products.
Once Upon a Farm based in Berkeley, CA,
has acquired direct-to-consumer baby food
brand Raised Real based in San Francisco, CA.
This allows Once Upon a Farm a foothold in
the frozen food category.
Pete and Gerry’s Organics is selling a majority
stake in the family-owned free-range and pasture-raised egg business to private equity firm
Butterfly to accelerate the company’s steady
growth to meet rising demand for more ethically and sustainably produced eggs. Butterfly
will help Pete and Gerry’s expand distribution
across the country more quickly, opening the
door for a new processing facility and partnering with additional farms on the West Coast.
Pete and Gerry’s current COO Erik Drake is
stepping up to the role of CEO as a result of
the move.
