M-FAST™
Miller Forensic Assessment of Symptoms Test™
Holly A. Miller, PhD
Pretense or presence?
Measure malingering of psychopathology
The presence of malingering in legal
and forensic settings is much higher than
it is in general clinical settings. In forensic
settings, for example, malingering is likely
to occur in about one sixth of all cases,
with a percentage as high as 20% for
insanity evaluations. Assessing patients
or clients for malingering requires more
than clinical judgment—but many
instruments are lengthy, and rating
forms may be written at a level that
is too difficult for some examinees.
Purpose
Age
The M-FAST features a structured interview
format and brief administration time so
you can get answers and determine
follow-up quickly. Items were developed
to operationalize response styles and
interview strategies that have been
shown to identify individuals who
are feigning psychopathology.
A 25-item screening interview, the
M-FAST can be easily integrated
into a larger evaluation.
