MCCB
A possible path to a better life? Find out.
Measure cognition in individuals
with schizophrenia
In an effort to improve cognition of those
diagnosed with schizophrenia, the National
Institute of Mental Health developed
a program called Measurement and
Treatment Research to Improve Cognition
in Schizophrenia (MATRICS). This program
seeks to develop new and more effective
medicines for people diagnosed with
schizophrenia to help them have a better life.
A result of that program, the MCCB, is a
battery of neuropsychological tests designed
to evaluate whether these new drugs are
effective. Backed by the NIH, the NIMH, the
FDA, and field experts, the 10 tests in the
MCCB measure an array of neurocognitive
domains, including processing speed,
attention/vigilance, working memory,
visual and verbal learning, reasoning and
problem solving, and social cognition.
It’s a useful tool as an outcome measure
of cognition-enhancing drugs, for studies
of cognitive remediation, and cognitive
change over time, and as a cognitive
reference point for nonintervention studies
of schizophrenia and related disorders.

Another MATRICS measure, the BIFCA
assesses an individual’s ability to
perform key tasks of daily living. It is
designed as a coprimary outcome
measure in clinical trials of medications for individuals diagnosed with
schizophrenia and related disorders.
