Wisconsin Card Sorting Test®

A measure of abstraction
that also assesses
executive function
Assess abstract reasoning ability
When building a comprehensive
neuropsychological battery, you
want tests that are reliable, valid, and
quick. Most importantly, you want
tests that tell you what you need
to know about your client so you
can make informed decisions.
The WCST is a measure of prefrontal
functioning and abstract reasoning ability. Because it requires the
examinee to develop and maintain
problem-solving strategy across
changing stimulus conditions, organize
searches, use environmental feedback
to shift sets, direct behavior toward
achieving a goal, and modulate
impulsive responding, it’s also useful
as a measure of executive function.
Unlike other measures of abstract
reasoning, the WCST provides
objective scores not only of overall
success, but also for specific sources
of task difficulty. This allows you to
pinpoint areas of concern that may
need further testing or treatment.
