Randy Borum, PsyD, Patrick Bartel, PhD, and Adelle Forth, PhD
Assess, identify, and intervene
Assess risk of violence in adolescents
Columbine. Sandy Hook. Marjory
Stoneman Douglas. Despite proactive
measures, school shootings are still occurring. Now it’s more important than ever to
evaluate students whom you suspect may
be at risk for violent behavior.
No assessment instrument can predict
future actions with certainty. They can,
however, confidently assess the likelihood of
risk based on known factors to help you with
diagnosis and treatment.
The SAVRY was developed to evaluate risk
of violence in adolescents. Based on the
structured professional judgement (SPJ)
model of assessment and not designed
to be a formal test or scale, it examines
historical, social, clinical, and protective
risk factors. Items have a direct implication
on treatment, including the consideration
of dynamic factors that can be useful for
intervention in risk reduction. You can’t do
it all—but you can do your part to help to
keep your students and staff safe.
Purpose Evaluates violence risk
in adolescents and
indicates useful targets
for intervention
