EDDT ™
Emotional Disturbance Decision Tree™
Bryan L. Euler, PhD
Get multiple perspectives of
symptoms of emotional disturbance
With 25 students or more in a regular
classroom, most teachers are in a unique
position to observe those who exhibit
symptoms of emotional disturbance. These
students need your help, but they can’t get
it unless certain conditions—as specified
by IDEA—are documented.
You rely on teachers for pertinent
information about the students they
refer for evaluation so you can make
well-informed decisions. The EDDT
captures the teacher’s perspective of
a student’s behavior in the classroom.
criteria for ED, the EDDT evaluates
the inability to build or maintain
relationships, inappropriate behaviors or feelings, pervasive mood/
depression, and physical symptoms
or fears.
Designed to map directly onto the
often vague and unwieldy IDEA
The EDDT includes an Educational
Impact cluster that documents
when a student’s social–emotional and behavioral issues have
an educational effect (required for
IDEA eligibility). Use the EDDT in
conjunction with the EDDT-PF and
EDDT-SR for a well-rounded picture
of a students’ symptoms, and keep
them on the path to success.
