The spirit of the American West roams free like
the Wild Horses of Sand Wash Basin. About
165 horses call this area home and can usually
be spotted in the Piceance Creek Basin.
Remember to stay a safe distance from the
animals and respect private land.
Take a step back in time and wander through
the National Historic District of Meeker.
Don’t miss the Milk Creek Battlefield site - a
memorial park with interpretive signage to
honor all of those who lost their lives in the
last major battle engagement with a Native
American Tribe and the US Army.
This is a detour you will be glad you took,
connecting Meeker to Yampa. Along the way,
lose yourself in the beauty of the White River
Valley and Ripple Creek Pass. As the birthplace
of the Wilderness Act, Trappers Lake remains
beautifully untouched, just how Arthur Carhart
envisioned it in 1919.
