SERCO DEFENCE
Serco was contracted by the Australian
Antarctic Division (AAD) in April 2016
to undertake the design, build and
management of a new Antarctic supply
and research vessel to replace the existing
capability provided by Aurora Australis.
The RSV Nuyina is currently under
construction and scheduled to be
commissioned in mid-2020. The RSV Nuyina
will be operated and maintained by Serco
out of its home port of Hobart, Australia.
Serco is responsible for:
• managing all the activities necessary
to co-ordinate, develop, design,
construct, integrate, test, commission
and deliver the ship
• managing and performing all the
activities necessary to operate,
maintain, repair, modify or adapt the
ship and, where required, establish
support through subcontract
arrangements
• maximising Australian industry
participation (AIP) through engagement
with local industry and network
organisations.

SKYTRADERS
Skytraders has been engaged in Antarctic
aviation since 1999 when it first responded
to a call by the Australian Antarctic Division
(AAD) for registration of interest in the design
and construction of an airlink for Antarctica.
Skytraders is now widely viewed as the world
leader in cold climate aviation technology.
Amongst its achievements are:
• pioneered the first civilian flights to
the Antarctic, and introduced the first
regular civilian airline operation into
remote East Antarctica
• first ever landing of an intercontinental
twin engine civilian airliner on a blue-ice
runway
• first Supplementary Type Certification of
a Transport Category aircraft on snow skis
• designed and engineered a retractable
skis system to permit take-offs from
wheeled runways to a landing on snow
or vice versa
• earliest winter medical evacuation
from East Antarctica.

In 2018, Skytraders celebrated its
10th year of providing the Antarctic Airlink
using an Airbus 319CJ for the AAD.
