VEOLIA ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES
Veolia is the global leader in water, waste
and energy management solutions that
contribute to the sustainable development
of communities and industries. Its aim is
to develop access to resources, preserve
available resources, and to replenish them.
Veolia ANZ is committed to the preservation
and clean-up of Antarctica. It has donated
240 specialised containers to the Australian
Antarctic Division and provided specialist
resource support to clean up historic waste
deposited in Antarctica.
Veolia manages waste returned from
Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic regions
by international and Australian expeditions
to the highest environmental standard.
The range of services available to the
international Antarctic community includes:
solid and liquid waste collection, sorting,
recycling, treatment and final disposal of
residuals. Veolia aims to maximise the
diversion of waste from landfill into
beneficial reuse.
A Veolia staff member, Gavin Allen, has
recently returned from a tour of duty to
Casey Station, Antarctica. His role was
to repurpose and recommission an existing
mobile water treatment plant to treat diesel
contaminated snow and leachate from
sediments. Gavin worked with a team from
the Australian Antarctic Division and the
University of Melbourne to commission,
operate and monitor the water treatment
process. The team successfully started up
and operated the treatment plant, treating
around 60,000L of contaminated water in
the first few weeks.
