DAY Twenty-Three: December 20 - Tuesday
There is a pain ng by William Kuralek en tled “A Regina Construc on
Site Christmas” that depicts the birth of Jesus in a modern city. Kuralek
was a Canadian ar st and Regina is the capital of the province of
Saskatchewan. Kuralek is reimagining Joseph, Mary and Jesus in a
modern and gri y urban context. The family is living in a trailer or
converted shipping container with the signs of construc on all around.
There are cranes and buildings under construc on. Joseph is warming
his hands by a re in a barrel. He wears coveralls and his working man’s
lunch pail at his feet. He is talking to a fellow, about what we do not
know, but there is a halo around his head.
We can see inside the trailer through the open door and see Mary
holding the infant Jesus awash in bright light. It certainly depicts in a
modern vein the poverty, humility, lowliness and hardship in which
Jesus came into the world. It is not with fanfare or pomp that Jesus’
birth is announced. Can we see the world-changing infant in the arms
of His mother in this humble and unpreten ous circumstance?
THAT is Who He is!
❅FOR CONTEMPLATION:
Luke 2:1-7; Isaiah 55:7-9
❅FOR REFLECTION:
What does Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem tell us about the way in which
God works in the world?
❅FOR PRAYER (ONE-MINUTE):
“Father, into this world You sent Your Son. He came in humble
circumstances. He came without fanfare. There were no parades, no
confetti. There was only the heavy breathing of the animals around
the manger and the smell of hay.” (pause)

“Out of this beginning came the conqueror of our sins who defeated
death. He has changed me. I pray to be humble and modest before
you this day. To this end I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.” (pause)
