DAY Twenty-Seven: December 24 - Saturday
Shepherds
And there were shepherds living out in the elds nearby, keeping watch
over their ocks at night. Luke 2:8
Shepherds were not considered to be the elite of their day. In fact, they
were considered the opposite. Sheep
were cool, shepherds not so much.
The Talmud stated that shepherds

And yet, on the day Jesus is born into
the world, an angel appears to shepherds out in the eld keeping
watch over their ocks. You can only imagine the scene. The angel
appeared to them in the darkness with the glory of God bathing them
in light. It was more than startling. It was terrifying beyond words. One
minute they are talking with one another by a re and then they nd
themselves in heaven’s light. They were petri ed!
In kindness to these men, the angel immediately tells them: “Do not be
afraid!” This is not a me for fear, but of joy.
“I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.
Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the
Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will nd a baby
wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
Luke 2:10-12
And then if the scene wasn’t strange enough with one angel, now a
great company of heavenly host appears and they are praising God.
