John Montague, 4th Earl of Sandwich, British first lord of Admiralty
was something of a rake and gambler and was at the gambling tables all
night in 1762 (according to a French Travel Book) without other food
and asked for slabs of meat to be inserted between pieces of bread. The
story is thought to be apocryphal. It is more likely the Earl ate them at
his desk and the world became aware of sandwiches when he requested
them in London. His title lent the preparation cachet and the word was
incorporated into the French dictionary. Any type of roll or bread and
any type of food that can be conveniently so eaten can go into a sandwich, hot or cold.
Q What is a Quahog? Is it a clam?
The answer may surprise you!
A The Quahog is an edible hard-shell
clam of the Atlantic coast of North
America also known as cherrystone, littleneck, and hard-shell clam. The shell
is very rough, has an off-white color
and is approximately 3 to 5 inches long. The Quahog (clam) (Mercenaria
Mercenaria) was first discovered in the 1700s. New England Indians used
the shells as wampum to trade for goods with the colonists. The Quahog
has come into its own as an enjoyable food item on many of Sandwich’s
fine restaurants. Another use for the mollusk was devised by the Cape
Cod Chamber of Commerce when in 2009 “Doug” the Cape’s official
Quahog became the peninsula’s little weather soothsayer. His yearly June
predictions let the public know the beach forecast for the summer. Move
over Punxsutawney Phil. Quahog fishing is allowed in Sandwich on Sundays from November to Memorial Day. Armed with a shellfish license
and the proper gear, families can dig for the delicious mollusk to make
their own enjoyable dishes.
