“I had no idea what I was starting when I walked through the doors of Richmont
Graduate University in 2018. I thought I would learn about counseling theories, write
papers on textbook content, and give presentations on various diagnoses. I did do
that. A lot of that. But that’s only half of it.
The other half consisted of more personal growth than I could have ever imagined.
Self-reflection paper after self-reflection paper, I highlighted, studied, and cried
through parts of my story that I skimmed over and never wanted to look at again. I
tried to uphold my wallflower school persona, but the more I hid myself, the more
professors and fellow students spoke acceptance over me with their intentionality,
vulnerability, and encouragement… and with their generous laughs at my dry humor. I
started to feel more seen and accepted than ever.
Alongside this community, I ventured into individual counseling for the first time. I’ve
taken more than three years of honest looks at myself in the safety and support of my
sweet, patient counselor. Sitting on that couch, I have felt the powerful, life-changing
experience that I have learned to provide while sitting in the classrooms at Richmont.
These past four years have been some of the most grueling years I’ve experienced,
and yet, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Thank you to everyone that helped me get
through this program! I feel privileged to have such a solid support team.
Now, I get the honor of sitting in the counselor’s chair full-time at the Richmont
Trauma Center as clients trust me with their stories.”
