The School serves a wide variety of organiza!ons throughout the Westside of Los Angeles
and beyond, making eorts to complement classroom studies and Parish Outreach eorts.
A vital part of each child’s educa!on at St. Ma"hew’s Parish School is par!cipa!on in our
gradelevel and schoolwide Service Learning programs.
In the 5th Grade, students develop a rela!onship with Second Grade children
from Saint Anne School, a Roman Catholic School in Santa Monica where many
families live below the poverty line. A joint book wri!ng project helps foster the
rela!onship between the students. The 5th Graders also support Saint Anne
through bake sales that raise funds to enhance their partners’ classroom.
As part of the 6th Grade interdisciplinary program that explores water issues,
students par!cipate in Heal the Bay ac!vi!es alongside their 2nd Grade buddies,
helping raise awareness about water issues within our school and the greater
Grade 7 focuses on suppor!ng the needs of the hungry and homeless in our
community. A%er a visit to some of our Community Outreach Partners, the
students lead the joint ParishSchool Food Ingathering and later serve meals at
a local shelter and transi!onal housing community.
The 8th Grade Service Learning summer project is the students’ opportunity to
make a selfini!ated dierence in the world and to begin living out the School
mo"o of Serve, Lead, Flourish in their own communi!es. Students complete
nine hours of community service at an organiza!on of their choosing,
challenging them to get involved in a community that feels dierent from their
own and recognizing their own gi%s and how much they have to oer others.
