THE GUPPY PROJECT !5TH & 7TH GRADE SCIENCE"
Students in 5th and 7th Grade gain handson experience in the disciplines of Earth and Life
Sciences through their work on the Guppy Project. The focus of this mul!year experiment
is the observa!on, monitoring, and recording of the health and evolu!on of guppies. The
project’s goal is to provide collegelevel laboratory experience in the collec!on of
5th Grade Scien!sts play a vital role by
ensuring the guppies thrive in a healthy
aqua!c environment. They conduct
regular water quality tes!ng on the tanks
for contaminants and pH. Tests measure
the ammonia, ammonium, nitrite, nitrate,
and pH levels.
7th Grade Scien!sts explore and
research the evolu!on of Trinidadian
guppies in partnership with Dr. David Resnick at the University of
California, Riverside. They conduct two yearly censuses of the
guppies collec!ng data on the popula!on and the evolu!onary
changes that are taking place.
PROJECT QUEST !6TH GRADE"
Water has played a key role in civiliza!on from ancient
!mes through the present day. Incorpora!ng history,
La!n, science, art, religion, and technology classes,
Project Quest allows students to explore the many
facets of this cri!cal rela!onship. Over an 8 week
course, students conduct research, generate
ques!ons, reflect upon and develop ideas, create
a selfdesigned product, and work to solve a
presentday water issue.
