SHAKESPEARE, THEATRE, ARTS AND THE RENAISSANCE !STAR" &
DIVING EDUCATION ENRICHMENT PROGRAM !DEEP"
The culmina!ng educa!onal experiences
at St. Ma#hew’s are STAR and DEEP,
integrated enrichment programs that
allow students to take ownership of their
learning experience. Both programs are
oered during the final term of the 8th
Steeped in the world of Elizabethan
England, STAR students work closely with
faculty and outside prac!!oners to
explore the history of theater through
lectures of Shakespeare’s vast library of
work. Students learn to deliver a Shakespearean insult and fight via onstage combat scenes.
STAR students will research Elizabethan era customs, costumes, and culinary delights and
the program culminates with a performance of a Shakespearean work.
The DEEP Program combines Math,
Science, Technology, and Physical
Educa!on. Scuba diving is used as a
theme to connect the academics and to,
quite literally, provide an immersive
experience. The students have scuba
diving lessons in our oncampus pool and
work in small groups to complete one of
several research projects in either a
scien!fic method or engineering track.
Students design and create websites to
document their work and publish their
findings. Over the last decade, DEEP
students have built underwater robots,
created echoloca!on devices, and studied the aspects of ocean acidifica!on and aqua!c
ecosystem resilience. DEEP alumni have published their research in scien!fic peerreviewed
journals, pursued careers and advanced degrees in science and engineering, and many have
dedicated their lives to the protec!on of the ocean and earth’s natural resources.
