During the school day, a strong emphasis is placed on the development and
refinement of the ability to read, an eort that exposes students to high quality
literature as well as phonics and word analysis skills. Value is placed on the
knowledge and pleasure that reading provides. Crea#ve and expository wri#ng
ac#vi#es emphasize each child’s authorship and the mastery of the protocols of
composi#on while promo#ng the ability to communicate ideas eec#vely.
The mathema#cs curriculum, Everyday Math, aims to develop in each student a
strong understanding of mathema#cal concepts and the mastery of facts.
Instruc#on includes manipula#ves, math games, coopera#ve learning, and
problem solving in journal work. Students are challenged to maintain open minds,
be curious, think divergently, make intelligent guesses, and problemsolve for
Social studies integrates ac#vi#es from mul#ple disciplines around meaningful
topics and points of focus. The goal of the social studies program is to help children
understand the many communi#es – both near and far, present and past – to
which they are related, and the responsibili#es that are associated with those
Science allows the students to inves#gate and appreciate the world around them.
A Lower School science teacher plans experiments and other ac#vi#es with the
students in the science lab, in their classrooms, or in the natural environment of
the school’s twentyeight acre campus.
