Mark Diekman grew up on a grain/livestock farm near Freelandville, Indiana. He earned
degrees from Vincennes, Purdue and Colorado State universities and was a postdoctoral
researcher at Iowa State. In 1979, he became an assistant professor in animal sciences at
Purdue and was a full professor by 1989. In 2016, he was appointed professor emeritus.
From 1979 to 1999, he directed a research program to resolve reproductive inefficiency in
the swine industry. He published 83 referred papers and 92 abstracts. In 1997, Dr. Diekman
was appointed the undergraduate program coordinator and remained in that role until he
retired in 2016. He is the only faculty member in the College of Agriculture to receive the
Young Agricultural Research Award, outstanding counselor in the College of Agriculture
and the PACADA advising award. He received the Dean Bev Stone Award for non-academic
advising in 2007. In 2021, he received the university’s Distinguished Service Award.
