Our Legacy Willow Bend seniors engage and give back
to their community through campus organizations that
keep the promise of tikkun olam.
Purls of Grace
Putting their talents and giving spirits to good use, Legacy
Willow Bend residents and outside volunteers formed a knitting
group, led by Carol Sobol. Members stitch, sew, and hand-knit
scarves, washcloths, and hats for charitable organizations in
DFW: churches, police departments, Hadassah, the National
Council of Jewish Women, and the Aaron Family Jewish
Community Center. These organizations then distribute the
lovingly crafted necessities to those in need.

Do-Gooders
In 2019, the LWB’s independent living volunteers,
led by Mickey Kurzman, Buddy Rosenthal, and Dave
Ohman, divided their charitable efforts between their
Legacy peers and the greater Collin County community.
Group members made visits to the healthcare center,
memory support, and assisted living residents—they
even enlisted canine companions in delivering well
wishes. Volunteers spent the last Friday of every
month at Minnie’s Food Pantry, and for the second
year, the group participated in Jewish Family Service’s
Embrace-a-Family program, donating holiday gifts
to needy families. Recognizing the needs of local
educators, group members filled backpacks and
raised money to help stock Plano ISD Education
Foundation’s CORE Store, a depository of classroom
resources teachers can utilize to help students
achieve success in the classroom. Thanks to the hard
work of these bighearted men and women, the future
is looking brighter already.
Patty Fields participates in regular recycling.
Greener Pastures
Realizing the importance of minimizing the Plano campus’ carbon footprint, residents and staff installed a
Green Committee, which meets quarterly to develop initiatives and lead educational programming on how to
create a more responsible community and lead greener lives. Decreasing the use of Styrofoam to almost zero,
encouraging staff to bring in their own reusable cups, and incorporating biodegradable products were among
the task force’s achievements over the past year.
