ERUV– Linking South Florida’s Jewish Communities
Numerous Jewish communities throughout South Florida have established their own Eruvs. These
communities and their Eruv Committees have invested many hours of effort involving area Rabbis.
The Eruv creates an official community and an accompanying travel freedom that the Orthodox didn’t
have on Shabbos. Its boundaries frequently consist of existing utility poles and cables under a specific
plan drawn up by a rabbinic authority. It is then checked each week to see that the eruv is intact for
that particular Shabbat. An Eruv is an instrument by which an area which is not a private domain is
halachically (by Jewish law) converted to one. To achieve this, the right of passage is rented. To facilitate
an individual’s ability to experience the holiness and delight of the Sabbath, the Torah requires that a
foundation of observance be established by refraining from melacha (prohibited activities). During that
time, congregants are not allowed to carry anything except in what is defined by religious law as a
“private domain”. This often results in men walking to temple and social functions while women with
young children remain home. The prime purpose of the Eruv is to enable one to carry small necessities
such as a book, tallis, food, handkerchief, keys and the like, and to wheel a baby carriage within the
designated area.
