Taharat Hamishpacha &
Immersion in the Purifying Waters of the Mikvah
A Jewish marriage is a sacred institution, and the love between a husband and wife is a pure
and sanctified love. The laws of Taharat Hamishpacha (the Laws of Family Purity) and mikvah
(ritual bath) create the holiness of the marital relationship. A mikvah is a pool of water fed by
approximately 200 gallons of n atural water. It is built according to s pecific halachic regulations.
The laws of Taharat Hamishpacha specify that a husband and wife may engage in marital relations until the time of month when
the woman menstruates. From the onset of that time the couple may not be together physically, they relate to each other in nonphysical ways, talking and sharing. The couple develops meaningful ways to express love, affection, and appreciation, transcending
the physical.
Seven days after the woman’s menstrual flow ceases (but not before the twelfth day since the beginning of the period), she
immerses in the mikvah. Through this ritually prescribed immersion the Jewish woman enters into a state of spiritual purity and
after she fulfills this mitzvah, she and her husband may once again engage in physical relations.
Taharat Hamishpacha have been a sacred part of our Jewish heritage since the beginning of our history. They are G-d’s way for
husband and wife to live together and love. By practicing the ritual of Mikvah and accepting the presence of G-d into their marriage,
the intimate relationship of man and wife is itself good and beautiful and holy. It is worthy of receiving G-d’s blessing.
