ello to all my fellow surveyors! For those of you who
don’t know me or what I do (or maybe have forgotten), I’d like to take a few minutes of your time to
reintroduce myself and tell you a little bit about Texas Young
Surveyors (TYS).
My name is Cameron Lowe, and I am a second-generation
land surveyor based out of the Houston area who is on a mission to connect young professionals, recruit and help promote
the profession of surveying to kids and young adults, and to aid
young professionals in obtaining certi昀椀cations, licenses, or any
other goal in their career to help 昀椀ll the void and labor shortage
in our industry.
All the things I do within TSPS and TYS are centered around
that mission statement above. I took on the role of Director for
TYS in 2019 after its founding member, Anna Rios, transitioned
into a leadership role with the TSPS State Board. I’m not going to lie; I was anxious and intimidated when she told me she
wanted me to be her replacement (I had some big shoes to 昀椀ll!).
This decision has been one of the greatest blessings not only in
my career but in my life. I’ve met so many great people, mentors, and colleagues during my time in this role and I can honestly say that I can’t put a price tag on that… You get out what
you put in with volunteer organizations like TSPS and TYS.
TYS was 昀椀rst created by Anna Rios in 2017 with strong ties to
the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS) and their
Young Surveyor’s Network (YSN) group. We have been fortunate that TSPS has stepped in to support us in so many ways,
which has in turn been a key factor in our success and longevity.
H
I am excited to announce that back in January of this year, I
was voted in by my peers in YSN as the incoming Vice President
of YSN. I will be sworn in at the spring NSPS / YSN business
meeting in April, Lord willing. To say I am excited about this
opportunity would be a huge understatement. We have seen
incredible growth within the YSN group since I 昀椀rst started attending the meetings in 2019. We have gone from around 6-10
state coordinators like me to over 40 at our business meetings.
We have recently started to host the college student competition
in Arlington, VA in the springtime and have seen a rapid uptick
in participation. For the last 2 years we have been at capacity
with 24 different teams from over 22 different schools and this
year we are already at capacity.
I am so excited to continue building the momentum that the
future leaders of YSN have put into motion. I start this 3-year
leadership journey (Vice President, President, and Past President) under the leadership of incoming President, Nolan Mark,
Past President, Dr. Jacob Heck, and Secretary-Treasurer, Spencer McClutcheson. We have some very exciting things planned
this year and going forward for the YSN. Be on the lookout for
more information and feel free to contact me if you would like to support
our efforts or have any questions!
Thanks, and God Bless!
