the popular Life of Anthony about
the Desert Father and Egyptian
monk during his third exile. Life of
Anthony influences Augustine of
Hippo’s conversion to Christianity.
I AD 386. Augustine of Hippo
becomes a Christian. After reading
Romans, “A clear light flooded
[his] heart, and all the darkness of
doubt vanished away.” Augustine
is from the area known today as
Algeria, and he is considered the
most important early Christian
theologian from Africa. His
writings, such as City of God and
Confessions, have helped shape
much of Christian beliefs and
practices.
J AD 439. Gaiseric, king of the
Vandals, captures Carthage and
reintroduces Arian beliefs. He
persecutes Catholics, sending
