known today as Sudan. The
kingdom adopts a form of
Christianity that teaches Christ’s
divine and human natures are
united in one nature, which the
Coptic church believes today.

in Africa begins. The Christian
Nubian kingdom of Makuria gives
Arab traders a share in their slave
trading in the Baqt treaty. Between
8–17 million Africans are enslaved
in the Arab slave trade by the
twentieth century. Traders use land
routes across North and East Africa
as well as sea routes along the
coastline of the Indian Ocean.

transfers its allegiance to the
Coptic Church of Egypt.
