The Battle of Shimbra Kure (A).
A AD 1529. Ahmed Gragn, a
militant Muslim, conquers
Ethiopia. Imam Ahmad defeats
the Ethiopian army in the battle
of Shimbra Kure. He drives the
emperor into exile and becomes
the virtual ruler of Ethiopia.
B AD 1543. Battle of Woina Dega.
Many Portuguese soldiers using
muskets join with the rest of the
Ethiopian army to defeat Imam
Ahmad and the Muslim occupiers.
Christian rule of Ethiopia is
regained.
C AD 1550.* The capital of the
kingdom of Kongo, originally
named Mbanza-Kongo, is renamed
São Salvador after the large
cathedral there. By the seventeenth
century, it is one of the great
cities of the continent with an
estimated population of 30,000
and an additional 70,000 in the
surrounding area.
