E AD 1595. The Portuguese build
Fort Jesus in Mombasa in what is
now Kenya. Missionary efforts to
reach the local people meet with
only temporary success. Within a
few centuries, the Christian witness disappears.
F AD 1635–1840. The Capuchins,
an Italian Catholic order, send over
400 missionaries to the Kingdom
of Kongo in the largest missionary
enterprise in Africa prior to the
modern missionary era, which
begins in the late nineteenth
century.

G AD 1652. The Dutch East India
Company establishes Cape Town
on the southernmost tip of the
African continent as a supply
station for its trade in Indonesia.
This is the first permanent white
colony in southern Africa. By
1665 a Dutch Reformed Church
is established in Cape Town for
Dutch employees of the company.
For a century, they did little to
evangelise the local population.
