begin work in Congo. Congolese
Baptists become one of the largest
Baptist communions in the world
over the next century.
R AD 1884–1885. European powers
negotiate and map out their claims
to African territory at the Berlin
Conference.
L AD 1868. Cardinal Charles
Lavigerie, archbishop of Algiers
and Carthage, founds the
Missionaries of Africa as an
international missionary society
of priests and brothers. They are
commonly known as The White
Fathers because of their clothing.
M AD 1869. Queen Ranavalona II
of Madagascar is baptised. During
her reign, she makes Anglican
Christianity Madagascar’s state
religion, welcomes missionaries,
and promotes education and
Christian morals.
N AD 1871. The Twi translation
of the Bible is published. Twi is
the major vernacular language in
Ghana. Johann Gottlieb Christaller,
David Asante, and Theophilus
Opoku from the Basel Mission
work together on the translation.
O AD 1873. Missionary and
explorer David Livingstone dies.
His main legacy was inspiring a
new generation of missionaries to
evangelise Africa and to end the
slave trade.

S AD 1893. Rowland Bingham
founds the Sudan Interior Mission
(SIM). At the time of Bingham’s
death in 1946, SIM is one of the
largest faith missions on the continent with 400 missionaries
in Africa.
T AD 1895. Peter Cameron Scott
founds Africa Inland Mission. He
dies in Kenya in 1896, one year
after starting the mission.
