African-Initiated Churches and New Movements
AD 1885–1960
A AD 1885–1960. More than 90
percent of Africa is under the rule
of a European colonial power
during these 75 years. Missionaries
came to many parts of Africa
a century before colonialists,
but missionary efforts become
intertwined with colonial politics
and limit the impact of missionary
efforts in Africa. African Christians
respond with a widespread
movement of African-initiated
churches in the early twentieth
century.

taught that African people and
states can be politically independent, thoroughly African,
and authentically Christian at
the same time. The principles of
Ethiopianism contribute to the

and inspire Christian nationalists
and African-initiated churches.
