Methodist Church is formed.
African church leaders interpret
colonial missionaries’ dismissal of
local church leaders as a pattern of
Europeans keeping Africans from
leadership and create the United
African Methodist Church in
response.
J AD 1920–1924. The PhelpsStokes Fund works with the British
Colonial Office to determine how
to prepare its African subjects for
self-government. Two commissions established by the PhelpsStokes Fund encourage the use of
the mission school network to empower Africans. The commissions’
recommendations affect missionary policy, nationalist movements,
and the growth of a self-governing
church in British colonies.

K AD 1925. Aladura (meaning
“praying”) churches of West Africa
are founded. The Cherubim and
Seraphim Church is first, followed
by Christ Apostolic Church and
the Celestial Church of Christ. The
Aladura churches have confrontations with colonial authorities
and missionaries over issues of
leadership and governance.
