of African Unity is formed.
J AD 1970–present. The
Charismatic movement brings
Pentecostal teaching into existing
denominations, influencing virtually all Catholic and Protestant
denominations on the African
continent. Charismatics and
Pentecostals make up the fastestgrowing sections of Christianity
in Africa.
K AD 1980–present. NeoPentecostalism is a growing wave
of Pentecostal influence. This
movement of new indigenous
Pentecostal churches is largely
urban and young. Followers
proclaim God’s gifts of prosperity,
blessing, and health by faith. These
new churches multiply rapidly in
Africa’s rising cities.
L AD 1990. Basilica of Our Lady
of Peace is consecrated in Côte
d’Ivoire. This Roman Catholic
church is the largest church in
the world by some measures.

congregations in nearly 180
countries.
