but the sinner’s wealth passes to the

food,
but injustice sweeps it all away.
Those who spare the rod of discipline
hate their children.
Those who love their children care
enough to discipline them.
The godly eat to their hearts’ content,
but the belly of the wicked goes hungry.

A fool’s proud talk becomes a rod that
beats him,
but the words of the wise keep them
safe.
Without oxen a stable stays clean,
but you need a strong ox for a large
harvest.

13:20 Since we become like the company we keep, it is important to have friends we respect who have
also surrendered their lives to God. It is helpful to see others modeling the things that will help us to
preserve spiritual gains.
14:2 If we are truly seeking after God, we will want to obey and honor him. Like children who want to
please their parents, we should want to be obedient out of a desire to please God, our heavenly Father.
14:15 Trusting God to direct us with the advice of others is an important aspect of our spiritual growth.
Solomon, however, gave a wise note of caution in this matter: Don’t blindly trust others (see 20:6). A
healthy trust in others is developed gradually and carefully, and any advice that is contrary to the truth
revealed in the Bible should be disregarded, no matter who gives it.
