All of us are weak, inadequate, or incapable in some areas of life. We need help to move
ahead. We need help to get the job done. We need help to restore a relationship. We need
help to develop our skills. We need help to say, “I’m sorry.” God is our ultimate helper, for
he is wiser, stronger, more loving, more of everything than we are. We should cultivate the
habits of seeking the help of both God and others and of offering help to those in need.
Then we are becoming the kind of complete person God intended when he created us.
How does God help me?
• 2 C H R O NI C L E S 1 5 :4 | “But whenever they were in trouble and turned to the Lord . . . and
sought him out, they found him.” (See note on page 395.)
God helps you by always being available. God is present to help you whenever you call out
to him. Prayer is the lifeline that connects you to God for daily help.
• PH I L I P P I A NS 4 :1 9 | This same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from
his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.
H
• J A ME S 1 :5 | If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you.
God helps you by providing resources to meet your needs. God has a full supply house
and a ready supply system. It’s free for the asking, but you must ask.

• 2 C H R O NI C L E S 1 4 :1 1 | “O Lord, no one but you can help the powerless against the
mighty!”
• PSA L M 2 8 :7 | The Lord is my strength and shield. I trust him with all my heart. He helps
me, and my heart is filled with joy.
God helps you by giving you strength to face any crisis. God protects you from being
defeated by the enemy and gives you spiritual victory.
• I SA I A H 3 0 :2 1 | Your own ears will hear him. Right behind you a voice will say, “This is the
way you should go.”
God helps you through his Holy Spirit by giving you an extra measure of wisdom and
discernment.
• R O MA NS 8 :2 6 | The Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know
what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot
be expressed in words.
God helps you to pray even when you don’t know how or what to say.
How do I ask others for help? Why would they want to help me?
• NE H E MI A H 2 :5 | “If it please the king . . . send me to Judah to rebuild the city.”
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Nehemiah went right to the top—to the person who could
help the most—and got the help he needed. People may be more interested and approachable than we think.
• MA R K 2 :1 2 | They were all amazed and praised God, exclaiming, “We’ve never seen
anything like this before!”
Asking for help can be a blessing to other people. Because four men asked Jesus to help
their paralyzed friend, many onlookers believed in Jesus.
How can I help others?
• 1 J O H N 3 :1 7 | If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in
need but shows no compassion—how can God’s love be in that person?
• I SA I A H 1 :1 7 | Learn to do good. Seek justice. Help the oppressed. Defend the cause of
orphans. Fight for the rights of widows. (See note on page 605.)
