Holiness continued
us as holy, we have not perfected holiness. We must still strive each day to be more like
Jesus, more holy. Only when we get to heaven will we be completely holy.
What does it mean to be holy and live a holy life?
• 1 C O R I NT H I A NS 1 :2 | I am writing to . . . you who have been called by God to be his own
holy people. He made you holy by means of Christ Jesus, just as he did for all people
everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
• 1 C O R I NT H I A NS 6 :1 1 | But you were cleansed; you were made holy.
All who believe in Jesus Christ are made holy.
• E PH E S I A NS 1 :4 | Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to
be holy and without fault in his eyes.
• 1 C O R I NT H I A NS 1 :3 0 | Christ made us right with God; he made us pure and holy.
We are brought into a state of holiness not by what we do but by what Jesus did for us,
cleansing us from sin through his forgiveness.
• E PH E S I A NS 5 :2 5 -2 7 | He gave up his life for [the church] to make her holy and clean. . . . To
present her to himself as a glorious church without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish.
To be holy means that God looks at us as though we had never sinned.
• J O H N 1 7 :1 7 | “Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth.”
We grow in holiness by constantly learning the truths of the Bible and living by them.

• 2 C O R I NT H I A NS 7 :1 | Let us cleanse ourselves from everything that can defile our body
or spirit.

• R O MA NS 1 2 :1 | I plead with you to give your bodies to God. . . . Let them be a living and
holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable.
We grow in holiness by working hard to keep sin out of our lives.
How can we hope to live holy lives? On our own, it is not possible, for we are sinful people.
But we can give our bodies to God as an offering, a living sacrifice to him. He will help us
to become more and more holy.
• H E B R E W S 1 0 :1 2 -1 4 | Our High Priest offered himself to God as a single sacrifice for sins.
. . . By that one offering he forever made perfect those who are being made holy.
Holiness here on earth is not perfection; it is striving for purity. However, God promises
that those who are believers will one day, in heaven, be perfect.
How is God holy?
• J O S H U A 2 4 :1 9 | Joshua warned the people, “You are not able to serve the Lord, for he is a
holy and jealous God.”
• 1 S A MU E L 6 :2 0 | “Who is able to stand in the presence of the Lord, this holy God?” they
cried out.
God is completely separate from sin and evil. He is perfect and has no sin in him.
• H E B R E W S 7 :2 6 | He is the kind of high priest we need because he is holy and blameless,
unstained by sin. He has been set apart from sinners and has been given the highest place
of honor in heaven.
Christ is completely holy because he is completely free from sin.
• A MO S 4 :2 | The Sovereign Lord has sworn this by his holiness.
When God makes a promise, his holiness ensures that he will always do what he says.
• MAT T H E W 1 3 :4 1 | “The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will remove from his
Kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil.”
God’s holiness will not tolerate evil in his eternal Kingdom.
• I SA I A H 6 :3 | “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Heaven’s Armies! The whole earth is filled
with his glory!”
• I SA I A H 6 3 :1 5 | Lord, look down from heaven; look from your holy, glorious home, and
see us. (See note on page 659.)
