God is dazzling and glorious in his absolute purity. His holiness is so glorious it fills heaven
and is reflected in nature on earth.
How is it possible for me to be holy?
• J O B 1 4 :4 | Who can bring purity out of an impure person? No one!
You cannot create holiness in yourself because you were born with a sinful nature.
• L E VI T I C U S 2 1 :8 | “I, the Lord, am holy, and I make you holy.”
God is the only one who can make you holy. Holiness means to reflect God’s nature in
every way. The word holy is translated from a Hebrew word that means “to be separate,”
“to be set apart.” As such, holiness includes not only moral integrity, but also your entire
outlook on life as you realize that you are in the world but not of it. God promises to help
you break free from the attractions of this world so that you can live for him.
• E PH E SI A NS 1 :4 | Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to
be holy and without fault in his eyes.
• 1 C O R I NT H I A NS 1 :3 0 | Christ made us right with God; he made us pure and holy, and he
freed us from sin.
You become holy not by what you do but by what Jesus did for you, cleansing and
forgiving you from sin.
• DE U T E R O NO MY 1 4 :2 | You have been set apart as holy to the Lord your God, and he has
chosen you . . . to be his own special treasure.
How can God do holy work through unholy people?
• E X O DU S 2 8 :1 | Call for your brother, Aaron, and his sons, Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and
Ithamar. Set them apart from the rest of the people of Israel so they may minister to me
and be my priests. (See note on page 77.)
God knew the future sins of these men when he ordered them set apart to become his
ministers. In the same way, he will use you if you consecrate yourself to his service and
ask him to cleanse you.
• E Z E K I E L 2 0 :4 1 | When I bring you home from exile, you will be like a pleasing sacrifice to
me. And I will display my holiness through you as all the nations watch. (See note on page 744.)
What are the rewards of holiness?
• A C T S 2 0 :3 2 | “Now I entrust you to God and the message of his grace that is able to build
you up and give you an inheritance with all those he has set apart for himself.”
Holy living has countless practical benefits. It brings inner peace and confidence to your
life. More important, holiness guarantees an eternal inheritance for you in heaven and
gives you close fellowship with God.
PROMISE FROM GOD
• 1 T H E S S A L O NI A NS 3 :1 3 | May he . . . make your hearts strong, blameless, and holy as you
stand before God our Father when our Lord Jesus comes again with all his holy people.

Dishonest people want to rob someone else to enrich themselves. At its core, dishonesty
is taking something that is not ours. It can be taking material possessions, like stealing

Through Christ’s death you can stand blameless in God’s presence.

God makes you holy by setting you apart as special for him.
• C O L O SS I A NS 1 :2 2 | Yet now he has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ
in his physical body. As a result, he has brought you into his own presence, and you are
holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault.
