Burnout often comes when we take too much responsibility on ourselves. Delegate some
of your workload. Delegation can ease your burden, multiply your effectiveness, and allow
other people to grow.
• E X O DU S 2 3 :1 2 | “You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but on the seventh
day you must stop working. . . . It . . . allows . . . you to be refreshed.”
When people are tired, their productivity decreases dramatically. Rest refreshes and
energizes us to be more productive. Regular, consistent, weekly rest is an important part
of avoiding and recovering from burnout.
• 2 SA MU E L 1 7 :2 8 -2 9 | They brought sleeping mats . . . wheat and barley, flour and roasted
grain, beans, lentils, honey, butter, sheep, goats, and cheese for David and those who were
with him. For they said, “You must all be very hungry and tired and thirsty after your long
march through the wilderness.”
• DA NI E L 1 :1 2 -1 5 | “Please test us for ten days on a diet of vegetables and water,” Daniel
said. “At the end of the ten days, see how we look compared to the other young men who
are eating the king’s food. . . .” At the end of the ten days, Daniel and his three friends
looked healthier and better nourished than the young men who had been eating the food
assigned by the king.
• I SA I A H 3 0 :1 5 | “Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved. In quietness
and confidence is your strength.”
• MAT T H E W 1 1 :2 8 -2 9 | Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and
I will give you rest. . . . And you will find rest for your souls.
Burnout comes when we lose our connection to the Lord. Connecting with God taps into
his strength. Maybe you find it difficult to rest. You mistakenly believe that productivity requires constant activity. But sometimes you need to slow down in order to speed
up. Stop awhile to let your body and mind and spirit recover and reset your purpose, so
you can be more energized and productive when you are ready to get back to the work
at hand.
• Z E C H A R I A H 4 :6 | “It is not by force nor by strength, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of
Heaven’s Armies.”
Recognizing your limits is essential to overcoming burnout. Maybe you are trying to do too
much and become discouraged when nothing seems to go right. But sometimes circumstances may force you to take on more stress than is healthy. In such situations, God can
give you the strength to persevere, and nothing can stop you if you are acting within his
will for you.
Does Jesus understand my burnout?
• H E B R E W S 4 :1 5 -1 6 | This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced
all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our
gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we
need it most.
Jesus was human like us, experiencing the full range of emotions and struggles. Instead of
condemnation he gives mercy; instead of criticism he offers comfort and encouragement.
PROMISE FROM GOD
• I SA I A H 4 0 :2 8 -3 1 | The Lord . . . never grows weak or weary. . . . He gives power to the
weak and strength to the powerless. . . . Those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.
They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk
and not faint.

Take good care of your body by exercising, resting, and eating well. Poor diet and health
habits invite burnout.
