looked around and there beside his head was some bread baked on hot stones and a jar
of water! So he ate and drank and lay down again.
• PH I L I PP I A NS 4 :1 9 | And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs
from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.
You can be encouraged to know that God meets your needs.
• L U K E 5 :4 -5 | When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is
deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.” “Master,” Simon replied, “we worked
hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.”
You can be encouraged by listening and following God’s instructions.
• 1 C H R O NI C L E S 2 8 :2 0 | Then David continued, “Be strong and courageous, and do the
work. Don’t be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord God, my God, is with you. He will not
fail you or forsake you. He will see to it that all the work . . . is finished correctly.”
You can be encouraged by being a part of God’s work.
• 2 C O R I NT H I A NS 7 :6 | But God, who encourages those who are discouraged, encouraged
us by the arrival of Titus.

You can be encouraged when God sends others into your life to encourage you.
• R O MA NS 8 :3 8 -3 9 | And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s
love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our
worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No
power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be
able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
You can be encouraged when God’s peace floods your soul.
How can I encourage others?
• E Z R A 5 :1 -2 | Haggai and Zechariah son of Iddo prophesied to the Jews in Judah
and Jerusalem. They prophesied in the name of the God of Israel who was over them.
Zerubbabel . . . responded by starting again to rebuild the Temple.
Sometimes encouragement involves getting a person involved once again in productive
work.
• A C T S 1 1 :2 3 | [Barnabas] encouraged the believers to stay true to the Lord.
Barnabas is known as the “great encourager” in the Bible. Barnabas’s encouragement of
John Mark helped him become a great leader in the church. Encouragement is more than
hollow praise; it is urging others to hold fast to the principles of faith.
• PH I L E MO N 1 :1 1 | Now he is very useful to both of us.
Showing trust in a person is a great source of encouragement to him or her.
• PH I L I PP I A NS 1 :6 | And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will
continue his work until it is finally finished.
Encouragement is affirming others and the work they are doing for God.
• J O SH U A 2 4 :1 3 | “I gave you land you had not worked on, and I gave you towns you did
not build.” (See note on page 214.)
Encouragement can come from reviewing God’s past blessings.
• J O B 2 9 :2 4 | “When they were discouraged, I smiled at them. My look of approval was
precious to them.”
Sometimes just a smile is a great encouragement.
What makes it easier to encourage others or receive encouragement?
• J A ME S 4 :1 0 | Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor. (See note
on page 1125.)

• J O H N 1 6 :3 3 | “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you
