• J O SH U A 8 :1 | Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid or discouraged.” (See note on
page 199.)
Don’t be afraid of failing again. Failure wins when you accept defeat and give up.
• 2 T I MOT H Y 2 :1 2 | If we endure hardship, we will reign with him.
Failure isn’t the end—it’s about beginnings. You can recover and move on. There is a
way out.
• H E B R E W S 4 :1 5 -1 6 | This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses. . . . So let us
come boldly to the throne of our gracious God . . . [to] find grace to help us when we need
it most.
Realize that God’s work is not limited by our failures. He does not reject us in our weakness but rather embraces us so that we can receive strength to be all he intended us to be.
What is the one gift from God that never fails, never stops?
• 1 C O R I NT H I A NS 1 3 :8 | Prophecy and speaking in unknown languages and special
knowledge will become useless. But love will last forever!
Virtually all of our special gifts and talents will fade over time as we age and turn feeble. But
the one great gift from God that never fails or fades, and continues forever, is love. This is a
gift from God that we can give to others, and its benefits extend far beyond our lifetimes.
• PSA L M 3 7 :2 3 -2 4 | The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of
their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand.

PROMISES FROM GOD
Fairness See also Equality; Justice
Life just isn’t fair! How many times have you said that? Heard that? Something really
wasn’t fair, and you knew it. Someone wasn’t fair, and you resented it. Of course life
isn’t always fair and people aren’t always fair, and circumstances aren’t always fair. But
we must recognize first that fairness is not the same as equality. God doesn’t give us
all the same circumstances, the same job, the same kind of family, the same environment in which to live. Since we are all unique individuals, we approach life in unique
ways and we reap unique rewards and consequences. And God treats us differently
in order to bring each of us to him. But he loves us all the same and desires the same
salvation for us all. Fairness in how we treat others, then, involves weighing the circumstances and doing what is best for others. We may not be able to treat others equally,
even our children, but we do need to be equal in the way we love and value those
involved.
What’s the goal of fairness?
• MAT T H E W 7 :1 2 | “Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you.”
• I SA I A H 3 3 :1 5 -1 6 | Those who are honest and fair . . . these are the ones who will dwell
on high.
• PSA L M 1 0 3 :6 | The Lord gives righteousness and justice to all who are treated unfairly.
Being fair is making sure that right prevails, that people are not unjustly treated. It indicates
we are thinking more about others than ourselves and that we are sensitive to their needs. It
demonstrates a sense of justice that does not want to see evil or sin win. It is an inner desire
for integrity and an outward desire to build up the self-worth of others. It is to be like Christ.
• PR O VE R B S 2 4 :2 9 | And don’t say, “Now I can pay them back for what they’ve done to me!
I’ll get even with them!”
Seeking justice against evil is fair and right; getting even is revenge.
What’s the difference between fairness and justice?
• I SA I A H 1 0 :1 | What sorrow awaits the unjust judges and those who issue unfair laws.
