Faith continued
How much faith must I have?
• MAT T H E W 1 7 :2 0 | “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed,
you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing
would be impossible.”
The mustard seed was often used to illustrate the smallest seed known to people. Jesus
says that faith is not a matter of size or quantity. It is not the size of your faith but the size
of the One you believe in that makes the difference. You do not have to have great faith in
God; rather you have faith in a great God.
How can we pass faith on from generation to generation, or is faith mine alone?
• J U DG E S 2 :1 0 | After that generation died, another generation grew up who did not
acknowledge the Lord or remember the mighty things he had done for Israel. (See note
on page 218.)
One generation’s devotion to God does not secure the next generation’s devotion to God.
But one generation can leave a legacy of godliness, which clearly points the way to what
a life of faith looks like, thus making it attractive to others. We must involve ourselves for a
lifetime with the next generation, sharing God’s love and goodness. But then it is up to the
people of the next generation to make faith their own.

Presence of God
“You can count on me—I will not let you down.” Saying that implies faithfulness.
A husband and wife vow on their wedding day to be faithful to one another, devoted
and committed to one another in all areas of marriage. It is a vow to be with one’s
spouse, to stay with one’s spouse, and to build up one’s spouse. Again and again
throughout the Bible, God holds faithfulness up as one of the foundational qualities
that he expects from his people. There is nothing like the faithfulness of a spouse,
friends and family, and God to build our sense of security.
How do I cultivate faithfulness?
• 2 K I NG S 1 2 :1 5 | No accounting of this money was required from the construction
supervisors, because they were honest and trustworthy men. (See note on page 339.)
• DA NI E L 6 :4 | But they couldn’t find anything to criticize or condemn. He was faithful . . .
and completely trustworthy.
Cultivate faithfulness by being honest and trustworthy.
• DE U T E R O NO MY 2 8 :9 | “If you obey the commands of the Lord your God and walk in his
ways, the Lord will establish you as his holy people.”
Cultivate faithfulness by obeying God’s Word.
• 1 T I MOT H Y 3 :1 2 | A deacon must be faithful to his wife.
Cultivate faithfulness by keeping your promises and commitments.
Why should I be faithful? Society tells me I should be able to do what I want.
• PR O V E R B S 3 :3 -4 | Never let loyalty and kindness leave you! . . . Then you will . . . earn a
good reputation.
Faithfulness brings a good reputation and trust from others.
