Jesus wanted to make it clear that children are special in his eyes. If Jesus had such a
high regard for all children, shouldn’t we also have a high regard for them?
What kind of relationship does God want parents and children to have?
• E PH E SI A NS 6 :1 , 4 | Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this
is the right thing to do. . . . Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you
treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the
Lord. (See note on page 1069.)
• PR O VE R B S 2 2 :6 | Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they
will not leave it.
Parents are God’s shepherds for their children, commissioned to guide them, nurture them,
care for them, clothe them, feed them, and help them come to know the Lord.
How can I most effectively teach my child about God and his ways?
• DE U T E R O NO MY 1 1 :1 8 -1 9 | “So commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these words of mine.
Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Teach them to your
children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you
are going to bed and when you are getting up.”
As parents, we have the remarkable privilege of living what we want our children to learn
(role modeling), sharing God’s truth we want them to hear (precepts), guiding them in which
way to go (choices), and then watching with joy as our work continues to future generations.
The best way to teach our children God’s ways is to continually live them out ourselves.
Why are stories used so much with children?
• E X O DU S 1 0 :2 | “I’ve also done it so you can tell your children and grandchildren about
how I made a mockery of the Egyptians and about the signs I displayed among them—and
so you will know that I am the Lord.”
Storytelling is an age-old method instituted by God, proven by people of all generations,
and always accepted by children.
When wonderful things happen, how can I pass them on to my children and
grandchildren?
• E ST H E R 9 :2 8 | These days would be remembered and kept from generation to generation
and celebrated by every family. (See note on page 449.)
God had done wonderful things for the Jewish people through Esther, things so wonderful
that they would not be forgotten for generations to come. Make it an annual tradition to
share past blessings.
Should I treat other believers like members of my own family?
• 1 PE T E R 3 :8 | Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love
each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude.
God’s family should have all of the qualities of family life. We should love one another,
sympathize with one another, and help one another. We should be bonded into a special
family relationship.
PROMISES FROM GOD
• I SA I A H 5 9 :2 1 | “My Spirit will not leave them, and neither will these words I have given
you. They will be on your lips and on the lips of your children and your children’s children
forever.”

• E X O DU S 1 3 :8 -9 | “On the seventh day you must explain to your children, ‘I am celebrating
what the Lord did for me when I left Egypt.’ This annual festival will be a visible sign to
you, like a mark branded on your hand or your forehead. Let it remind you always to recite
this teaching of the Lord: ‘With a strong hand, the Lord rescued you from Egypt.’ ”
