Giving continued
• E X O DU S 2 3 :1 9 | “As you harvest your crops, bring the very best of the first harvest to the
house of the Lord your God.”
We should give a tithe because it demonstrates that God is first in our lives.
• 1 C H R O NI C L E S 2 9 :1 4 | “Everything we have has come from you, and we give you only what
you first gave us!”
We should give because it reminds us that the things we have are not what is most
important.
• PSA L M 5 4 :6 | I will sacrifice a voluntary offering to you.
We should give out of a grateful heart.
• 2 C O R I NT H I A NS 9 :1 1 | And when we take your gifts to those who need them, they will
thank God.
We should give to others so that God will be glorified.
• 1 P E T E R 4 :1 0 | God has given each of you a gift. . . . Use them well to serve one another.
The more we give of ourselves, the more God’s generosity flows through us.
How much should I give?

• DE U T E R O NO MY 1 4 :2 2 | “You must set aside a tithe of your crops—one-tenth of all the
crops you harvest each year.” (See note on page 173.)
• PR O V E R B S 3 :9 -1 0 | Honor the Lord . . . with the best part of everything you produce. Then
he will fill your barns with grain.
• 1 C O R I NT H I A NS 1 6 :2 | On the first day of each week, you should each put aside a portion
of the money you have earned. (See note on page 1043.)
• 2 C O R I NT H I A NS 9 :7 | You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t
give reluctantly or in response to pressure.
• 2 C O R I NT H I A NS 8 :1 2 | Whatever you give is acceptable if you give it eagerly. And give
according to what you have, not what you don’t have.
• 2 S A MU E L 2 4 :2 4 | But the king replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on buying it, for I will not
present burnt offerings to the Lord my God that have cost me nothing.” (See note on page 296.)
While the Old Testament specifically talks about giving God one-tenth of what we make,
the New Testament encourages us to give what we can, to give sacrificially, and to give out
of a grateful heart. For many, this will mean giving far more than one-tenth!
How does God give?
• 1 T I MOT H Y 2 :6 | He gave his life to purchase freedom for everyone. This is the message
God gave to the world at just the right time.
God gives sacrificially. He gave his Son, Jesus, to become human and give up his own life
to give you eternal life.
• 2 C O R I NT H I A NS 8 :9 | You know the generous grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Though he
was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty he could make you rich.
God gives unselfishly. He shares everything he has with you.
• 2 C O R I NT H I A NS 9 :8 | And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always
have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.
• E PH E S I A NS 3 :2 0 | Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work
within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.
God gives generously and abundantly. His gifts to you are beyond imagination.
• J O E L 2 :2 3 | Rejoice, you people of Jerusalem! Rejoice in the Lord your God! For the rain
he sends demonstrates his faithfulness.
God gives graciously and never begrudges any good thing to his children.
• 1 C O R I NT H I A NS 1 2 :1 1 | It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone
decides which gift each person should have.
