It is important to allow yourself to grieve, but there comes a time for grieving to end. By
serving God and others with all the energy and enthusiasm you can muster, you will begin
to find healing. And as a Christian, you have the comfort of knowing that you will be with
God forever in a place where all grief will be gone forever.
I feel like I’ve lost everything. Where can I turn?
• PSA L M 3 4 :1 8 | The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits
are crushed.
• PSA L M 5 6 :8 | You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your
bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.
Turn to God in times of loss, for he alone can give you hope.
• PSA L M 1 1 9 :2 8 | I weep with sorrow; encourage me by your word.
Turn to God’s Word in times of loss, for there you will find God’s encouragement.
• 2 C O R I NT H I A NS 1 :4 | He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others.
When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.
Turn to godly people in times of loss, for they can give you God’s comfort.
PROMISES FROM GOD:
Growth See Maturity
Guilt See also Forgiveness; Mercy & Grace; Regrets; Sin
We’ve all felt guilty about something we’ve done wrong. Guilt is a God-given mechanism
to alert us that we’ve sinned. Sometimes we aren’t even aware we’ve done something
wrong until the feeling of guilt creeps up. Other times we feel stronger guilt than the
deed warrants. Ignoring the guilt is dangerous because we can eventually tune it out
and feel too comfortable with sin. The best way to deal with guilt is to confess the sin to
God and ask forgiveness. If the sin is against another person, confess it to them as well.
Forgiveness is the only cleansing agent that can remove both the sin and the guilt.
How am I guilty?
• R O MA NS 3 :2 3 | For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.
• J A ME S 2 :1 0 | The person who keeps all of the laws except one is as guilty as a person who
has broken all of God’s laws.
You are guilty of sin, as every human being who ever lived has sinned. The magnitude of
guilt may change with the magnitude of sin, but the presence of guilt is as sure with a “little
sin” as with a “big sin.”
• J A ME S 4 :1 7 | Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.
Sin is not only doing wrong things but also not doing right things.
• J O NA H 1 :5 | But all this time Jonah was sound asleep down in the hold.
The absence of a guilty conscience doesn’t always mean you are doing right.
How can I be freed from guilt?
• PSA L M 1 9 :1 2 -1 3 | Cleanse me from these hidden faults. Keep your servant from deliberate
sins! Don’t let them control me. Then I will be free of guilt. (See note on page 488.)
Keep guilt away by avoiding sin as much as possible and by promptly confessing any sin
to God. Guilt is a consequence of wrongdoing.
• A C T S 1 3 :3 9 | Everyone who believes in him is made right in God’s sight.
