Does God care when I am sick?
• PSA L M 4 1 :3 | The Lord nurses them when they are sick and restores them to health.
• MAT T H E W 1 5 :2 9 -3 1 | Jesus returned to the Sea of Galilee and climbed a hill and sat down.
A vast crowd brought to him people who were lame, blind, crippled, those who couldn’t
speak, and many others. They laid them before Jesus, and he healed them all. The crowd
was amazed! Those who hadn’t been able to speak were talking, the crippled were made
well, the lame were walking, and the blind could see again! And they praised the God
of Israel.
• PH I L I PP I A NS 2 :2 7 | And he certainly was ill; in fact, he almost died. But God had mercy
on him—and also on me, so that I would not have one sorrow after another.
• MAT T H E W 4 :2 3 | Jesus traveled throughout the region of Galilee, teaching in the synagogues
and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom. And he healed every kind of disease
and illness.
• MAT T H E W 1 0 :1 | Jesus called his twelve disciples together and gave them authority to cast
out evil spirits and to heal every kind of disease and illness.
• MAT T H E W 8 :1 7 | This fulfilled the word of the Lord through the prophet Isaiah, who said,
“He took our sicknesses and removed our diseases.”
• R E VE L AT I O N 2 1 :4 | “He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death
or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.”
God has full authority over all sickness, and he cares deeply when you are sick. He has the
authority and power to heal whoever he chooses. Eventually, he will remove all sickness and
suffering from all his children for eternity. Sometimes he chooses not to heal a person here
on earth, even a devout believer. We usually do not understand why, but someday we will.

Health is well-being—physical, mental, emotional, moral, spiritual. We can be physically
sick while mentally, emotionally, morally, socially, and spiritually well. Or we can have health
and sickness in any other combination. Tragedy strikes when several of these gang up on
us, as they often do. Sometimes emotional sickness or spiritual sickness induces physical
sickness. Or sometimes we are so physically ill that it takes us down emotionally and spiritually. At the headwaters of all health is spiritual health—being fit spiritually, in tune with the
Lord God himself.
For the sick, the concept of healing is a new lease on life. Sickness is debilitating,
creating a dark hole in our lives—something wrong or something missing. People with
sick bodies have limitations that restrict freedom of movement, freedom of capabilities,
and even freedom to enjoy life. Oh, to be released from sickness, to be healed! Healing
may be physical, emotional, or social, but it may also be spiritual, a restoration of the
soul. Sin is the ultimate sickness, eating at the core of the soul, but spilling out on
our physical, mental, social, and moral well-being. Healing from sin is a great gift that
comes from a right relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
