Jesus is the ultimate example of gentleness and humility. His way of dealing with and
teaching people demonstrates true humility. If you study the life of Jesus, you will understand true humility.
• PH I L I PP I A NS 2 :5 -8 | You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he
was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave
up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human
being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and
died a criminal’s death on a cross.
Jesus was God, yet he made himself nothing and suffered death on the cross for you.
How do I become humble?
• DE U T E R O NO MY 8 :2 -3 | Remember how the Lord your God led you through the wilderness
for these forty years, humbling you and testing you to prove your character, and to find
out whether or not you would obey his commands. Yes, he humbled you by letting you go
hungry and then feeding you with manna. . . . He did it to teach you that people do not live
by bread alone . . .
Humility comes when you recognize that you need God. Then watch him meet your
needs!
• 1 PE T E R 3 :8 | Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love
each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude.
• 1 PE T E R 5 :5 | You who are younger must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you,
dress yourselves in humility as you relate to one another, for “God opposes the proud but
gives grace to the humble.”
Serving other people will develop humility in you. Humility also means accepting the
authority of those over you.
How important is it to avoid pride and seek humility?
• MAT T H E W 1 8 :4 | “Anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the
Kingdom of Heaven.”
• J A ME S 4 :6 | “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
Humility is true strength, for it reaches into the Kingdom of Heaven. Pride is true weakness,
for it reaches no further than our own ego.
• 2 K I NG S 5 :1 3 | But his officers tried to reason with him and said, “Sir, if the prophet had
told you to do something very difficult, wouldn’t you have done it? So you should certainly
obey him when he says simply, ‘Go and wash and be cured!’ ” (See note on page 331.)
Humility is the first step toward wholeness.
• 2 C H R O NI C L E S 1 2 :1 2 | Because Rehoboam humbled himself, the Lord’s anger was turned
away, and he did not destroy him completely. (See note on page 393.)
Humility before God quenches his anger.
• 2 K I NG S 2 2 :1 9 -2 0 | ‘You were sorry and humbled yourself before the Lord. . . . So I will
not send the promised disaster until after you have died.’
Humility will save us from certain disasters.
What does it take to drive us from our pride into humility?
• 2 C H R O NI C L E S 3 3 :1 2 | While in deep distress, Manasseh sought the Lord his God and
sincerely humbled himself before the God of his ancestors. (See note on page 411.)
Unfortunately, when we prosper and all is well, we may fall into pride, thinking we have
achieved it all on our own. But when we are put down financially, physically, or in other
ways, we suddenly find it necessary to seek the Lord’s help.
