Humility continued
• 2 K I NG S 1 9 :1 9 | “Now, O Lord our God, rescue us from his power; then all the kingdoms
of the earth will know that you alone, O Lord, are God.”
Pride recedes when we realize there are battles we can’t fight on our own; we need the
Lord’s help.
Should we avoid pride even in doing God’s work, the most holy and wonderful
work of all?
• MAT T H E W 6 :1 | “Watch out! Don’t do your good deeds publicly, to be admired by others,
for you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven.”
• A C T S 2 0 :1 9 | “I have done the Lord’s work humbly and with many tears.” (See note on
page 1002.)
It would be easy to do the Lord’s work with great pride. After all, his work is the most
wonderful work in all the world. But Paul recognized that doing God’s work is serving,
which takes humility. Those who are proud are not good at serving.
How will humility change our relationships with others?
• E PH E S I A NS 4 :2 | Be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance
for each other’s faults because of your love.
• MAT T H E W 7 :3 | “Why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in
your own?”
H
Loving humility overlooks the faults of others because we see our own so vividly.
