PROMISE FROM GOD
• J O H N 8 :3 6 | So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.
Adoption See also Family
Adoption is a beautiful expression of God’s love for mankind. Adoption gives children a
new life that they could not achieve on their own. In the same way, Jesus provided the
way for us to have eternal life in heaven, a new life we could never achieve on our own.
Just as parents lovingly teach and nurture an adopted child, God teaches and nurtures
his children through the Holy Spirit. Just as adoptive parents welcome a boy or girl to
become their own child, God welcomes us all to be adopted into his own family and
to enjoy his blessings in this life and eternity. This hope in our spiritual adoption can
sustain those of us who are experiencing the frustrations and joys of earthly adoption.
Is adopting a child right for me and my family? How can I know for sure?
• MAT T H E W 1 8 :5 | “And anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf is
welcoming me.”
• PSA L M 1 3 8 :8 | The Lord will work out his plans for my life—for your faithful love, O Lord,
endures forever.

• J E R E MI A H 1 :5 | I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were
born I set you apart.

There are some things in life you can’t know for sure, but the Bible is clear on this: God
puts a high priority on loving children. If you adopt a child and welcome him or her into
your heart and life, you are demonstrating the kind of love Christ showed for you.
I’m wading through all the paperwork to adopt a child. How can I deal with
these months of anxious waiting?
• PSA L M 3 7 :4 -5 | Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires. Commit
everything you do to the Lord. Trust him, and he will help you.
• I SA I A H 6 0 :1 , 4 -5 | “Arise, Jerusalem! Let your light shine for all to see. For the glory of the
Lord rises to shine on you. . . . Look and see, for everyone is coming home! Your sons are
coming from distant lands; your little daughters will be carried home. Your eyes will shine,
and your heart will thrill with joy.”
Waiting is never any fun, especially when the heart is involved. That’s why it’s important to
imagine the end result: a child who your heart will “thrill with joy” over
How can I explain my decision to adopt?
• PSA L M 1 2 7 :3 | Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him.
• MAT T H E W 1 8 :5 | “And anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf is
welcoming me.”
If you choose to adopt, some people may not understand that decision. And this is especially true if the child is of different ethnicity than the adoptive parents. In such situations,
the best thing you can do is lovingly explain that you made your decision carefully, that
God loves all children equally, and that you believe God brought this child to your family
for a particular purpose.
How has God adopted me?
• J O H N 1 :1 2 | But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become
children of God.
• G A L AT I A NS 4 :4 -5 | But when the right time came, God sent his Son. . . . to buy freedom for
us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children.
When you accept Jesus Christ as your Savior, God adopts you into his family.
