Bitterness See also Anger; Frustration; Jealousy
Bitterness is anger that has settled in for the long term. It is an anger that has birthed
resentment, the feeling that we have been treated harshly, unfairly, or carelessly. Left to
eat its way deep into our minds, emotions, and even our souls, bitterness can turn us
into hostile, hardened people. The poison of bitterness, left unchecked, can destroy us.
Perhaps the most dangerous thing about bitterness is that it becomes a roadblock to
forgiveness, which puts our relationship with God and others on hold.
Part envy, part spite, bitterness is a slow-burning resentment that consumes the soul.
The experience of pain due to real or perceived injustices is common to all of us, but
resentment is clinging to and feeding those hurts until they dominate our lives. The Bible
indicates that the cure for resentment is the confession of bitterness and a willingness,
with God’s help, to forgive the offender.
